Time-Space Compression. Just using the term in a sentence makes you feel a little more intelligent. As a tech and gizmo lover, it is a concept that always grabbed my attention and imagination. How far can humans go? How far is too far? What is the pinnacle? It reminds me of a Netflix show that you need to be 17 to watch: Black Mirror. The show is all about the implications of pushing the limits of technology on humans. It reminds me of how we need to have conversations about responsibility, have a creative mind to foresee ill-effects, and collaborate to find solutions. I saw a post on Facebook recently that sums up how I feel, and I am reminded why the humanities are invaluable.

I challenge my students to think about what a 4th Agricultural Revolution, 5th Industrial Revolution, a 6th Stage of Borcherts’ would look like. Then I ask them how they will respond when their kids beg them to have the phone chip embedded in their ear, and contact surgery that permanently keeps them, “turned on.” Ugh. Black Mirror.

Did I mention that I love technology?
