Contagious Diffusion-02

About this Page:

The Chief Reader at the AP Reading, Dr. Seth Dixon, reminded teachers in his speaker notes not to explain that cultural diffusion is how fashion spreads. Thinking to myself: “Great! I already have these pages all thumbed and illustrated, now what!” But then I remembered scoring this question at the AP reading and how kids misinterpreted the question. Here is what it looked like:AP FRQ Diffusion Question 2018

What happened was that, for part B, students began rambling about how the three different types of diffusion spread in terms of fashion. Their amazing teachers were able to make the concept of cultural diffusion stick with a fashion example, something 14-16 year olds can relate to. And while they may have described it properly, they did not get the points because they did not describe how TERMS diffuse, as asked in the question. It was a heartbreaker for many a student.

So I hesitantly decided to march on and complete these pages with examples using fashion, though I try to illustrate through my network of people how diffusion is spread to a larger group from a single node (and that is what a student needed to say.)

Besides, how can anyone pass up the opportunity to illustrate toothpaste hair?
