Cartography and Google Maps-02

Page #33

About this Page:

I LOVE everything about early maps, particularly when they were going through their little cartography renaissance phase. I love how science meets art-particularly how artists like Claes Janszoon Visscher made their maps. They tried so hard to tell the reader about the lands they were charting in the borders of the image. Sneek a peak at the full color image provided by Wikimedia HERE.

I certainly pay respect to early cartographers. No Photoshop, no Adobe Illustrator, no GPS, no Google Earth-and it was all done by hand! The artistic ability blows me away. Do you have a favorite Atlas on your coffee table at home? My collection ranges from the wonky art map book to the absolute accurate atlas, but they are all loved the same.

I stylized Visscher’s map for this page and created a puzzle piece Earth for my interpretation of what those Google Earth cars do (and GIS for that matter). Remote control cars were completed by myself as well as background and text. My illustrator, Dan Harris, is responsible for my fingerprints 🙂

Have you ever caught one of those Google Cars trying to take pictures of your neighborhood? Pretty neat right? Or scary, depending on your position (and I’m not talking location). Did you know that other countries have the ability to tell Google to blur out their buildings if they don’t want them on the Google Earth program? Maybe you’ve seen this as you explore the streets of Europe while in Google Earth on a Friday night. Wait. Oh that’s just me? 🙂

Have a great day everyone!
